The University of British Columbia (UBC) Point Grey campus is set to welcome a transformative entrance through a new 24,700 m² health science academic and research building. Spearheaded by Perkins&Will’s Vancouver office and Schmidt Hammer Lassen in Denmark, the structure is poised to embody UBC’s global stature and commitments, enhancing the arrival experience for the community. Slated for completion in 2024, the facility will house the School of Nursing, School of Kinesiology, Integrated Student Health Services, and UBC Health and Language Sciences, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in a variety of spaces including labs, clinical areas, lecture halls, fitness facilities, and offices.
Gerry McGeough, UBC’s director of planning and design, highlights the project’s aim to reflect the university’s dedication to Musqueam partnership, carbon-neutral design, financial stewardship, and academic prowess in health. The design focuses on inclusivity and engagement, featuring accessible paths, inclusive amenities, and a public plaza that integrates the community with natural elements.
The project also underscores UBC’s commitment to Indigenous reconciliation, with designs that resonate with Musqueam culture and support wellness and learning. Aimed at promoting health and well-being, the building includes a daylight-filled atrium, extensive windows for a connection to the outdoors, and uses nontoxic materials.
Targeting CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building Standard and LEED v4 Gold certification, the building emphasizes sustainability through passive design, efficient systems, and reduced embodied carbon, with mass timber construction to enhance biophilic benefits and welcome visitors into UBC’s evolving campus.
